South Africa
South Africa’s president Jacob Zuma has confirmed the appointment of the country’s new public protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane.
A lawyer who served with the South African Agency in charge of State security, replaces Thulisile Madonsela whose mandate ends later this month.
The appointment of Mkhwebane as the public protector was approved in September by the Parliament despite opposition from the Democratic Alliance which was uncomfortable with her ties to the state agency in charge of information operations.
The new public protector will face the challenge of independence which has characterized the post occupied by Thuli Mandonsela for the past seven years. Madonsela has investigated major scandals of corruption in South Africa.
The most remarkable one is undoubtedly her investigations into the Nkandla scandal which pushed president Zuma to refund more than 530,000 U.S. dollars to the public Treasury.
